Tabin Brooks, Synaptic Sunburst, 2025, watercolour on paper.
The HVG, is a peer lead self help group that provides a safe and supportive place for people with lived experience of hearing voices, visions, and other unusual sensory perceptions.
If you hear voices, you are not alone. Studies show that around one in ten people will hear voices at some point in their lives. Hearing voices is a very personal experience and is different for everyone, in terms of what the voices say and the life events that provoke them.
Starting in May 2025, the fortnightly group has been meeting at Unique State, and engaging in participant lead artworks that seek to explore and share each individuals experiences with the wider public.
The outcome of this program, is to develop a poster to promote the group, and provide insight for other members of the community who seek to participate in the group or learn more about hearing voices.
The process of creating visual responses has lead to dynamic conversations and insights between peers and will cumulate in a booklet that shares these words and images. We would like the opportunity to showcase these works in a community space, providing greater understanding, awareness and support for people with mental health concerns.
The group is facilitated by Murrumbidgee Local Health District, Mental Health Drug and Alcohol service, with the support of Wellways Australia and Melissa Roberts Foundation.
The exhibition runs May 15-June 6.
