Meet the Creatives: Bec Cutler on sustainable art and creative community at The Station

Step into The Station Creative Workspace and you’ll find more than just studio walls – you’ll find connection, conversation, and artists quietly shaping a new creative heartbeat for Wagga. Among them is local artist Bec Cutler, whose nature-driven, material-rich practice is as layered as the ecosystems she draws inspiration from.

“My arts practice is rooted in exploring relationships between nature, sustainability, science and materiality,” Bec Cutler says. “I work across various mediums including textiles, paper, clay, paint, wood, leather and found objects and incorporate eco printing and natural dyes to create 2D & 3D artworks.”

Bec recently ran a hands-on eco-printing workshop at The Station and is currently in the thick of preparations for a solo exhibition later this year. “I am currently exploring and developing new textile mediums and artworks as part of a new body of work for my upcoming exhibition.”

While relatively new to the space, she’s already feeling at home, and inspired by what it offers. “There’s lots to love: Central location, opportunities for studio space, gallery and workshop spaces,” she says. “The glass frontage now helps to promote the gallery area and reminds me of the gallery window they had in the old location.”

For Bec, The Station’s biggest strength is the chance to connect. “Being an artist is generally a solo affair so it can be lonely and isolating. The Station provides the opportunity to meet other artists and the Eastern Riverina Arts team to discuss, confer, gain advice or collaborate.”

She’s part of a growing network of artists bringing the space to life – and she’s keen to see the broader community do the same. “It’s important to support places like this that provide a unique service to the community and rely heavily on funding to exist.”
