Meet the Creatives: Lucy Buttenshaw on storytelling through paint and finding joy in The Station

Step into Lucy Buttenshaw’s world and you’ll find paintings alive with quiet observation, memory, and meaning. Her works don’t shout – they gently suggest. They whisper of places, objects and creatures that feel familiar, yet curious. With her first exhibition at The Station Creative Workspace opening as part of the May 16–18 launch weekend, Lucy is bringing her layered stories to Wagga in a big way – through a show of ENORMOUS little moments.

Lucy Buttenshaw’s art practice is rooted in her surroundings. “My artwork comes from the excitement of reinterpreting and suggesting stories that refer to places, objects and creatures around me,” she says. “These everyday surroundings and the memories created along the way form the visual language I use in my painting.”

In the studio, Lucy prefers to keep a few canvases rolling at once, giving herself space to breathe and let ideas settle. “I prefer to have two or three paintings on the go which I can rotate when I feel it's wise not to push a painting that needs more thinking time,” she explains.

Her exhibition ENORMOUS little moments is her first time working with The Station, and it’s left a lasting impression. “It has been a delight in all regards. I have had the opportunity to meet interesting people working in and around The Station, all of whom have been really supportive.”

Lucy also fell in love with the space itself. “The Station works beautifully as a gallery because not only is it a good size with plenty of character, it’s fitted with a professional hanging system and flexible lighting.”

As a regional artist based in West Wyalong, Lucy also values how Eastern Riverina Arts reaches beyond the city. “Another aspect of ERA that I particularly appreciate is how they support smaller regional communities. I have had the opportunity to attend some wonderful ERA performances and music in my hometown.”

Now, with her exhibition forming part of The Station’s launch festivities, Lucy is thrilled to be part of the action. “I feel incredibly privileged to be exhibiting at The Station during the launch weekend, which sounds wonderfully energetic and varied. It will be a fantastic opportunity to meet others, be inspired, and get creative!”
